Winter Driving in the Borders

Winter conditions in North Northumberland and the Scottish Borders can be challenging:

  • Check weather forecasts before setting out, especially on higher routes
  • Clear all windows and mirrors thoroughly before driving
  • Reduce your speed and increase following distances on icy or wet roads
  • Use dipped headlights in poor visibility
  • Carry an emergency kit including a torch, blanket, de-icer, and a charged mobile phone
  • Know your route — some minor roads may be impassable in heavy snow
Rural Roads

Driving on Rural Single-Track Roads

Our area has many single-track roads with passing places. Here are some key tips:

  • Always use passing places — pull into one on your left, or wait opposite one on your right
  • Drive at a speed where you can stop safely within the distance you can see
  • Watch for livestock — sheep, cattle and horses are common on rural roads
  • Be patient — don't pressure the vehicle ahead to go faster
  • Use your horn before blind bends on narrow roads to alert oncoming traffic
